One of the chief strengths of the reboot series remains its appealing young cast, who approach their iconic characters with respect while keeping their performances loose, enlivening their camaraderie with reciprocal warmth and understated humor. Rihanna Releases Cosmic Video for 'Sledgehammer' From 'Star Trek Beyond' However, that yields a strategy to disorient the swarm by blasting them with some Beastie Boys at max volume - “Is that classical music?” asks a perplexed Bones - which feeds into the film’s affectionate embrace of throwback relics, from a dusty motorcycle to an antiquated Federation spaceship from the distant 2160s. Windon, the visuals take robust advantage of the big Imax canvas, and the special-effects work is first-rate, even if the trippy, bee-like swarms of Krall’s destroyer pods become somewhat unrelenting as an image of enveloping darkness. Shot by Lin’s regular Fast & Furious collaborator Stephen F. And while the story isn’t without confusing elements, as warmongering intergalactic blitzes go, it’s coherent enough. However, there’s also no shortage of intimate, character-driven moments. But even if a team of four editors would normally spell trouble, the pacing, structure and crescendos of suspense are assured, with Michael Giacchino’s forceful score pumping up the action. Lin directs with his foot often jammed on the accelerator, careening from one physical or aerial clash to the next, where the densely packed movie could sometimes stand to take a breath. She also seems a promising potential love interest for Scotty in future installments, if only he’d stop calling her “lassie.” She’s a terrific new addition to the ensemble, played with a sexy sneer by the lithe Boutella. Kirk and Chekov land with the suspicious alien who got them into the mess (Lydia Wilson) Bones ( Karl Urban) and a seriously injured Spock are flung down elsewhere to banter in their respective personae as voluble joker and emotionless literalist Sulu and Uhura are taken prisoner by Krall, along with the bulk of the Enterprise crew and Scotty teams up with Jaylah ( Sofia Boutella), a zebra-faced alien also stranded on the planet and living in an abandoned Federation ship.Ī technical whizz and a take-charge fighter with impressive kickboxing moves, Jaylah’s look has a touch of Iggy Azalea but her taste in music runs more toward the vintage hip-hop of Public Enemy, “Fight the Power” being her anthem of choice. This allows for some amusing interplay among the core characters, outside of their familiar group dynamic. But those concerns get pushed aside when a vicious attack by Krall leaves the Enterprise crew stranded without a vessel and dispersed on the rocky desert terrain of Altamid, an inhospitable planet surrounded by an unstable nebula. While one track may be rather open and inviting with huge turns and soft wooden fences to keep you on the track, the next might have you hopping on rooftops, through store windows and into the sides of buildings. One improvement in this area is that rather than relying on woods, more woods or a rural town setting, FlatOut 2 features tracks based in not only woodlands but full cities, fields, canals and more. FlatOut 2 does make some pretty good strides to fix this, though we still wouldn't call any of these raceways "classics". Sure, there were some pretty cool segments here and there, but just a year later it's hard to remember any specific tracks or sections from the game. One of the original FlatOut's main weaknesses was that its track design wasn't all that impressionable. The game may not be as fast or deep as some of its top-tiered competitors, but Bugbear has done a fine job at bottling chaos into a racer. With the number of things crashing down around you at essentially all times and your opponents constantly battling you and each other for placement, there's always something crazy and chaotic happening on-screen. This is easily FlatOut 2's greatest strength - the races are just pure fun. That doesn't mean that it's a total lottery drawing of whether or not you'll be able to win as skillful driving will almost always net you a finish in the top three, but it does mean that races never get boring. It's extremely common to find yourself (or any other car for that matter) move from last to first to last to first and so on before a race finally finishes. Cars will constantly smack into each other more and more as a race goes on. What this boils down to is that races become flat-out battles (pun not intended). This applies to each and every racer, so you'll constantly see one computer opponent trying to knock another one out. Everyone starts out calm and collected, but if you start pushing other racers around and attempting to knock them off the track, they'll turn around and do the same to you. The other really cool part about the other racers this time out is that they get vengeful. The result is that when you're in the fifth race of a cup and you're a point behind in the standings, you'll immediately recognize who you need to beat (or knock out) in order to stand on the highest step of the winner's podium. What does work, however, is that they always use the same vehicle for each class of car, making them easy to spot in the midst of a race. According to the splash screens during loads, each one is said to have a unique driving style and personality, though you don't really get a sense of this during any given race. They're fairly generic to be honest, but after a handful of races and looks at the leader board you'll come to know them all by name and curse them when they knock you out. Another nice improvement is that rather than racing against a field of nameless drivers, FlatOut 2 pits you against a group of seven other competitors out for blood. It's a great mix that makes the game feel much different than something like Burnout while still maintaining a nice feeling of chaotic competition. The game is certainly arcade-centric in almost every aspect of its design, but the game's handling does lean a tad towards the simulation side of racing in that you'll have to carefully manage how much gas you apply at any time. Rather than sliding all over the road like a Chihuahua on ice, the cars handle quite well and you always feel in control. One of the biggest improvements in FlatOut 2 is that vehicles handle a whole lot better than they did previously. While many of the changes will likely come off as being subtle or evolutionary rather than revolutionary, the end result is that the game is a great deal more refined and fun than the original. Bugbear has now followed up with FlatOut 2, a game that betters the original in almost every way imaginable and most certainly with regards to its handling and physics system. If you later on want to start adding CO2, I've written a guide that step-by-step explains how to do so, which you can find here on my site. I can recommend you to read this article on my website that goes further into why aquarium plants need CO2. The third one on the list is Vallisneria! Most definitely not as easy as java ferns and anubias, but with the right care it is an awesome plant that will propagate quickly.Īlthough this plant does not need additional CO2, it does benefit from it. You can check out that article right here on my website! I would still highly recommend it, the plant has even made it to my list of 25 plants that do not require substrate. The one downside to Anubias is that they tend to gather algae on the leaves due to their slow growth. They will differ in size (the anubias Nana is small and the anubias Gigantea is large) and shape.Īnother reason why anubias plants are this popular is because they are one of the few plants that do not get eaten by plant-eating fish like African cichlids and goldfish. If they have several, take the one you fancy. If you were to choose one of the species but you do not know which one, go to your local fish store and see which ones they have in stock. There is a list of subspecies below, but keep in mind that there are way more! There are several different subspecies within the anubias family that are widely available and all just as suitable for our aquarium. To do this, take the plant out of the water and use a sharp knife such as a scalpel to cut the plant into pieces by dividing the stolon. You can cut the stolon into different parts, make sure each part has a couple of healthy leaves and some roots. If your plant grows it will gather more leaves over time. They will thrive this way.Īnubias can definitely be propagated, where you can start with one plant and create many more smaller ones. It is even better to not plant the roots of the anubias in the ground but rather attach it to a piece of wood or a rock. The base of the plant is called the stolon, and it is important to not bury this in the substrate. You can recognize an anubias plant by its dark, sturdy leaves that come in a variety of shape and sizes. This means that they do not require high lighting in our aquariums! That alone is perfect for beginners. They are named after Egyptian god Anubis, which is the god of the afterlife, because they are found at shady places. These plants are native to central and west Africa and are found in rivers and streams. The second plant on this list is the Anubias genus. You should let the new plants grow from a while and when they are a reasonably size you can remove them from the leave to plant it somewhere in your tank where you would like them to grow. Java fern will propagate by growing tiny plants on the tips of the leaves, which eventually will fall off. Algae thrives when there is an imbalance in your tank and liquid fertilizer is a great and easy way to reduce algae growth. If you're struggling with algae problems, it's a great idea to start adding liquid plant fertilizer to your aquarium.Ī quality plant fertilizer will make sure that your plants have access to everything they need to grow. This also allows for some cool aqua scape possibilities. They are slow growers and therefore do not require high nutrient levels in your water. The java ferns will thrive when they are tied to something instead of buried in the ground with their roots. Instead, try tying them to a piece of rock or wood. They however do not take nutrients from the substrate, and they do not do well with their roots buried. One of the mistakes that a lot of people make when they first get their java ferns is planting them with their roots in the substrate. Check it out here if you're looking for some more inspiration. Tip: Java Fern currently stands at the top of my list of aquatic plants that are suitable for beginners. If the light is too bright this might even cause brown patches in the leaves of the fern, so keep the light low to medium. In the wild, java fern grows in shady areas, so it does not require high lighting in your aquarium too. The first aquarium plant for beginners that comes to mind to a lot of people is the Java Fern. There are many different options available, but what plants should you start out with? I have been keeping live plants for over 5 years now, and have learned a lot through my own experiences. Live plants are one of the most beautiful things you can add to your aquarium. How to Install a VPN on an Xfinity Router Read on to start browsing without limits.
